Collaboration between the various contractors and workers on a construction site is integral when it comes to involved projects. Unfortunately, the competitive culture in securing and completing jobs can make teamwork more of a challenge. The good news is there are construction team building methods that can help bring a crew together when working on a project. 

1. Leadership Structure

A strong leadership structure is necessary to make sure all the teams are working together smoothly. The general structure can vary depending on the project, but usually, there is a senior project manager at the lead who works to unite the upper-level architects and executives with the subcontractors and teams working on the ground. Next in the hierarchy is the main contractor or site project manager, followed by the head subcontractors for each team. All should be included in planning meetings so that everyone is equally informed. 

2. Project Planning

Although initial project planning typically takes place before the subcontractor teams are brought in, consultation with the team leaders is a must to make sure everyone is on the same page. Project planning meetings should take place as often as necessary when new teams are brought in. This way everyone can work together to develop realistic timelines and goals for each section of the project.

3. Team Building

On-site issues can be avoided with the help of team-building activities that encourage camaraderie among the construction workers on each subcontractor team -- particularly those that must work closely together. Although recreational work events outside of the construction site can help, on-site team building is also effective. Starting the day or work week with team meetings that involve all teams involved is a good idea. For example, put on a safety trivia contest, but divide the workers into groups that involve members of different subcontractor teams so that they can work together. 

4. Task Delegation

A lot of strife between different construction teams is a result of miscommunication. A common example is when one team feels like they are constantly completing the work of another team. This is where the site manager and subcontractor leads must work together to develop proper task delegation and responsibility management for each of their teams. Once they decide on this plan, it should be presented to the teams in the daily group meeting so that everyone knows what to expect from the teams they are collaborating with.
