Protecting Your Home's Foundation With Exterior Drain Tiles

Isaac Simpson

The area around your home and foundation needs to be protected to ensure water does not get into the basement or crawlspace and cause damage to the foundation walls. Water damage, mold, and wood rot are all critical issues, and the best way to control them is to control the moisture and water in and around your home. Exterior drain tile installation is an excellent place to start, and when done correctly, it may even allow you to reclaim areas like a basement and turn them into usable living space.

Foundation Inspection

When you are dealing with water problems around your home's foundation, it is essential to have a professional service inspect the foundation for signs of damage. Controlling water flow around the foundation is the best way to ensure damage is not occurring to the concrete walls, but if you have water inside the house, you most likely have water problems that need attention.

If the inspector finds water inside, the next step is to excavate the area around the foundation to look for further damage outside the home and determine if an exterior drain would effectively fix the problem. Most foundation services can do this work for you, or you can hire a drain tile service to install the drainage. If you will use an extensive amount of tile on the property, it may be a good idea to have the two services work together on your project.

Addressing Water Flow

When trying to correct drainage issues around your home, you need to determine where the water is coming from and how to get it to flow where you need it to. On many homes, the water problems start with gutters that are not working correctly and can also have land that is higher than the home on either side.

The natural flow of the water in this situation must be changed, and exterior drain tile installation is an excellent way to catch the water, redirect it, and allow it to drain off in an area that will not sustain damage as a result. In some locations, canals and rivers that are near your home can be good places to drain water. If you do not have those options, the drain tiles can be extended to get the water as far from your home as possible and allow it to drain away into the soil.

In some instances, a drain field can be used, and the drain tiles will be connected to it. Talk with the drain tile service in your area, and they can help you decide the best way to deal with the water and install the infrastructure you need to keep the water out of your home.
