How Working With A General Contractor Can Streamline Your Renovation

Isaac Simpson

When you are considering renovating part of your home, you may consider hiring a general contractor to organize the work for you. The general contractor can hire subcontractors to handle the specific tasks throughout the renovation, but the general contractor will ensure everything happens to ensure the job goes smoothly.

The Right Contractor

There are many general contractors around that can handle many different kinds of jobs, but if you are doing a specific remodel, like the kitchen in your home, you may want to find a kitchen remodeling contractor to organize the job and ensure the work is done correctly. If the general contractor you are considering does not have interior remodeling experience, they can likely get the job done, but it may not go as smoothly as it would if they specialized in this kind of work.

Often, the reason to use an experienced general contractor is that they have experience doing many different kinds of construction and remodeling and understand what is required throughout each step of the job. The general contractor does not need to be a plumber, but they need to understand plumbing and the plumbing code to ensure they have a plumbing subcontractor doing the work correctly and to code.

A large part of the remodel will be like this. Since your general contractor is the point of contact on the job, they will deal with you, the subcontractors, inspectors, and vendors to ensure good communication and that things are happening on time to keep the project on schedule. If you have any concerns about the work, the schedule, or the budget, the GC is the person you will need to deal with.

Hiring Subcontractors

When you hire a general contractor for your renovation, they will organize the subcontractors who will be working on the job. Often the subcontractors have worked on jobs with the general contractor before and have a working relationship that allows smooth interaction and efficient communication.

Many general contractors have a crew that will do the demolition and construction on the job, but subcontractors are typically used for plumbing, HVAC work, painting, and electrical work. The building code often requires these specialty contractors to do specific work in the home, and the building inspector will want to know what companies are working with you on these tasks.

If there is a problem with the plumbing, electrical, or other work during the renovation, the general contractor is held responsible, but they will often have the subcontractor come back and fix anything they did not do correctly. If the general contractor can not get the original subcontractor back, they can fix the issues themself or hire a different subcontractor to deal with the problems so the renovation meets the code when they are done.
